The BRC Global Standard for Food Safety Issue 6 will come into effect in January 2012.  One of the significant changes from Issue 5 is the requirement under Section 3.9.2 to include a quantity check or mass balance as part of the traceability system test.

"The company shall test the traceability system across the range of product groups to ensure traceability can be determined from raw material to finished product and vice versa, including quantity check/mass balance. This shall occur at a predetermined frequency and results shall be retained for inspection. The test shall take place at least annually. Full traceability should be achievable within four hours."

ProdTrac users are able to demonstrate a mass balance capability in a matter of seconds.  Without a recording system like ProdTrac, this four hour requirement can present a real challenge.
