Laziza International Pasanda Masala with Garlic/Ginger Spice Mix contaminated with Sudan 1 dye
17/12/2003
A batch of Laziza International Pasanda Masala with Garlic/Ginger Spice Mix has been found to be contaminated with the illegal dye, Sudan 1. Laziza International Pasanda Masala with Garlic/Ginger Spice Mix was imported by Opulent Foods Company Ltd., based in the London Borough of Brent, from Pakistan where it is manufactured by the Convenience Food Industries (Pvt) Ltd. The product was distributed by Opulent Foods Company Ltd. and has been on sale in various retail outlets in the UK.
The company is believed to have undertaken a trade withdrawal of affected products in 100g packets – with Best Before End date of October 2005 and Lot Code 2523026. No other Laziza International brand products are known to be affected. There remains the possibility that some of the affected products may still be on sale in retail outlets or remain within the catering trade. Enforcement officers are instructed to ensure that if found it is withdrawn and destroyed.
As the company has not issued any press release or point of sale notices in retail outlets there remains the possibility that unused affected product is in consumers' homes. Local Authorities have been asked to consider providing local publicity at the next available opportunity.

Food Standards Agency issues fresh warning about tahini potentially contaminated with salmonella
24/10/2003
Further to the food hazard warnings issued on 26th September and 8th October 2003, the Food Standards Agency has issued a warning advising consumers against eating another brand of tahini after tests have shown it may be contaminated with salmonella. The affected brand of product, which is sold in glass jars with a screw top lid, is called Morphakis Tahini - Crushed Sesame Seeds. The product, which is manufactured by a firm in Cyprus called C H Morphakis Ltd, has been withdrawn from sale by the importer.
All jars of the product with the best before date of 31.12.2006 could potentially be contaminated. Anyone who has any of this tahini at home should not eat it, but discard it. The product has been on sale in cash and carry stores, delis and specialist food stores across England and at one outlet in Cardiff.
The Agency has asked local authorities to contact shops that might stock the product, to ensure that it is removed from sale, and has informed the European Commission to ask that the Cypriot authorities investigate the contamination of this product.
Random tests were carried out on this brand last week in a follow-up investigation after another tahini product made by a different manufacturer was found to be contaminated with salmonella earlier this month. This product was withdrawn from restaurants and cafes.
Further details of this product recall and images of the affected products can be found on the Food Standards Agency website at:

Food Standards Agency issues warning about tahini contaminated with salmonella
08/10/2003
Further to the announced recall of 16kg tins of Labanese Tahini, The Food Standards Agency is warning consumers today against eating the 454g and 907g products after tests found they might be contaminated with salmonella. Tests were carried out on the product last week in a follow-up investigation after the catering-sized 16kg tins made by the same manufacturer were found to be contaminated with salmonella. All of these products were withdrawn from restaurants and cafes last month.
Tahini, a savoury paste made from ground sesame seeds, is a Middle Eastern and Mediterranean speciality. The affected brand of product, which is sold in plastic containers with a screw top lid, is called Super Tahineh.
The full brand name on the side of the container reads:
Samih Hassan Al Yaman & Sons
ABOU EL HASSSAN
AL YAMAN
The Founder and The Original
Super Tahineh
100% Crême de Sesame
All products with best before dates from January 2005 up to, and including, July 2005 could be affected. Anyone who has any of this Tahini at home should not eat it because it may be contaminated with salmonella. It should be thrown away. Tahini, which is normally sold in delis and specialist food stores, is a product most likely to be eaten by people from Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Greek and Turkish communities.
The plastic containers are beige coloured, with lettering on the label in green and a green screw-top lid. They come in 454g and 907g sizes. The name of the manufacturer is marked on the side of the container as S.H. Al-Yaman & Sons.
The Lebanese-made product is being withdrawn from sale by London-based importer Damasgate. Shops that might stock the product are being asked to ensure that it is removed from sale.

Warning issued by FSA about Sammy's Easy Cook Couscous found to contain contaminated chilli powder
02/10/2003
The Food Standards Agency today warned that some batches of a couscous product sold in the UK contain chilli powder which has been contaminated with the illegal chemical dye Sudan 1. Sudan 1 is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. Sudan 1 could cause cancer, although there is no immediate threat of illness. People most at risk would be those eating contaminated products regularly and over a long period of time. The Agency has been investigating which food products in the UK could have been affected by contaminated chilli powder since July.It is understood that three chilli suppliers in India had been adulterating their chilli powder with Sudan 1. More than 40 contaminated products have been withdrawn from sale and recalled in the UK so far.
Affected batches of Sammy's Easy Cook Couscous - Zesty Lemon and Coriander have now been withdrawn from sale. The product has been on sale in selected Tesco Stores throughout the UK (excluding Tesco Express Stores) and Makro Self Service Wholesalers.
The product was sold through Tesco stores in 200g packets with a white background and the name 'easy cook couscous Zesty Lemon & Coriander' in green lettering. Only batches with the best before dates below are affected:
07.09.2004
08.09.2004
24.09.2004
This product was sold in Makro stores in 1.5kg clear jars with a red lid and a label with a green background and the name 'easy cook couscous Zesty Lemon & Coriander' mainly in white lettering. Only batches with the best before dates below are affected:
30.12.2004
01.01.2005
04.01.2005
09.01.2005
It is believed that the trade withdrawal has been effective and that it is unlikely that any affected product remains on sale. The company has indicated that it produced 13,600 units of the 200g pack sold through Tesco and 264 units of the 1.5 kg jar sold through Makro. However, there is the possibility that unused affected product may be in consumers' homes. Anyone who has purchased one of these contaminated products, which are produced by First Quality Foods, should either throw it away, or return it and request a refund from the store where it was purchased.
No other First Quality Foods Sammy's Brand is known to be affected.
Further details of this recall and images of the product can be found at the Food Standards Agency website:

Trade recall by Khan Quality Foods of various meat preparations contaminated with Sudan 1 dye
25/09/2003
Various frozen meat preparations manufactured by Blackburn-based firm Khan Quality Foods have been found to be contaminated with the illegal dye, Sudan 1. Sudan 1 is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. The product presents a health risk if consumed in sufficient quantity, and does not comply with the food safety requirements specified in the Food Safety Act 1990 due to contamination with Sudan I.
These products have been sold at small retail outlets, including butchers and corner shops in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Greater Manchester and the London area.
The company has undertaken a trade withdrawal of all the affected products below:
KQF Fiesta Chicken Sausage
KQF Fiesta Lamb Sausage
KQF Fiesta Beef Sausage
KQF Spicy Chicken Lollies
KQF Spicy Beef Lollies
KQF Spicy Lamb Lollies
KQF Spicy Chicken Lollies

No other Khan Quality Foods products are known to be affected.
All the above products are either packed in white polystyrene trays over-wrapped with clear plastic and a label applied to the surface, or a plastic bag heat-sealed at either end with the product description on the front.
At 3rd October 2003, it is believed that the trade withdrawal has been effective and that it is unlikely that any affected product remains on sale. However, because the company has not issued any press release or point of sale notices in retail outlets, there is the possibility that unused affected products remain in consumers' homes. Anyone who has one of these contaminated products in the freezer should either throw it away, or return it and request a refund from the store where it was purchased.

Product recall of Star S.P.A. sauces contaminated with Sudan 1 dye
11/09/2003
The Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland has issued a further food hazard warning as a result of its investigation into products on the UK market that may contain the chemical dye Sudan 1. Sudan 1 is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. However, there is no immediate threat of illness. Those most at risk would be people eating contaminated products regularly and over a long period of time.
Since July, the Agency has been investigating any food products, in the UK, that may have been affected by contaminated chilli powder. It is understood that three chilli suppliers in India had been adulterating their chilli powder with the red dye Sudan 1, which is not permitted for use in food.
To date a number of products have been withdrawn and recalled from sale in the UK because the chilli powder they contained had been linked to these sources. The latest products, that are known to have been contaminated with the dye, are from the Favourit brand range of seasonings packed by Martin Foods, Belfast. Only the products listed below are affected; no other Favourit products are affected:
- Favourit Madras Curry Powder 50g
- Favourit Aromatic Spicy and Hot Madras Curry Powder 500g
- Favourit Chilli Powder 50g
- Favourit Quality Fine Ground Hot Chilli Powder 500g
The 500g products are packaged in a white tub with a red lid and the 50g products are packaged in a clear tub with a red lid.
The date codes affected are May 2005, June 2005, July 2005, August 2005 and September 2005. On 11 September 2003, the company has undertaken a trade withdrawal of these products with date codes between December 2004 and September 2005 inclusive. Products with date codes of November 2004 or before, or October 2005 or later are not affected
The products affected have been distributed in Northern Ireland through identified wholesalers:

Trade withdrawal of Johnson & Jamaica brand of Mr Browns and Shads seasonings contaminated with Sudan 1 dye
02/09/2003
Batches of Johnson and Jamaica brands of Mr Browns and Shads Seasonings have been found to be contaminated with the illegal dye, Sudan 1, and the company have started a trade recall. Sudan 1 is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose. The products present a health risk if consumed in sufficient quantity, and do not comply with the food safety requirements specified in the Food Safety Act 1990 due to contamination with Sudan 1.
Johnson & Jamaica Shads Fish and Meat Seasoning and Mr Browns Original Jamaican Style Fish and Meat Curry Seasoning have been on sale in numerous small independent retail outlets throughout the Birmingham area.
The withdrawal affects products which have the following specification and codes;
- Shads Fish and Meat Seasoning 400g Container - BBE MAR 2005
- Shads Fish and Meat Seasoning 450g Packet - BBE FEB 2005
- Mr Browns original Jamaican Style Fish and Meat Curry Seasoning 150g Packet - BBE MAR 2005
Shads Fish and Meat Seasoning is packed into both a 400g container and a 450g sachet. The container is opaque plastic with a red screw on lid and the sachet is clear cellophane which is heat sealed at each end. Both products have the same label picturing a cockerel between two palm trees at the top, the word Shads in the centre and a plate of various meats at the bottom.
Mr Brown’s Fish and Meat Curry Seasoning is packed into a 150g plastic sachet that is heat sealed at both ends. The label has a yellow background, with a green, black and yellow flag emblem at the top and bottom and a clear product viewing window in the centre.
No other Johnson and Jamaica products are known to be affected.
At 11th September 2003, it is believed that the on going trade withdrawal is being effective however it is likely that some of the affected products may still be on sale. Because the company have not issued any press release or point of sale notices in retail outlets there remains the possibility that unused affected product is in consumers' homes.

ProdTrac aids product recalls
28/08/2003
The protracted series of product recalls associated with the Sudan 1 contamination alert is a perfect illustration of the value of ProdTrac. Although no traceability system can guarantee the prevention of a food contamination alert, it can give the assurance that all affected products can be rapidly identified and traced.
ProdTrac works by offering a simple and user-friendly means of collecting, storing and arranging full details of ingredients and products, together with their respective origins and destinations. In the event of a food hazard alert such as the Sudan 1 incident, the operator of a ProdTrac system has an almost instantaneous display of the facts. Once it had become clear that a contaminated ingredient had been purchased, every event of that ingredient's use can be traced, through complicated production runs and eventually through product sales to customers. So it is very easy to identify and isolate contaminated stocks, and to pinpoint the customers to be advised of a product recall. In the meantime, non-contaminated stock is clearly identified for release, minimising production and supply disruption and ensuring the continuation of a smooth and professional service to customers.
Any food processor or supplier can get innocently involved in an industry alert such as Sudan 1. But the wise operator will have a system like ProdTrac to protect against the consequences.

Recall of Rajah Brand Seasonings containing illegal colour - Repeat Warning
12/08/2003
Despite the issue of a Food Standards Agency Food Hazard Warning On 31 July 2003, there is evidence that affected products remain available at retail level.
These products contain contaminated chilli powder that contained an illegal dye called Sudan I. The chilli powder was imported into this country from India and used in products produced under the Rajah brand. Sudan I is not a permitted colour under the Colours in Food Regulations 1995. It is considered to be a genotoxic carcinogen and its presence, at any level, is not permitted in foodstuffs for any purpose.
Only the following products – and no other Rajah products – are affected:
- Rajah Tandoori Masala
- Rajah Natural Tandoori Masala
- Rajah Jerk seasoning
- Rajah Chilli & Lemon seasoning
- Rajah Oriental Noodle seasoning
- Rajah Chicken seasoning
These products are retailed in 100g packets or tins (both retail packs), in 400g (retail) and 1kg packets and 8kg tubs (both wholesale).
Of these products, only those containing any Best Before End dates up until 18.07.2005 are affected. Any product with a Best Before End date of 18.07.2005 or later is confirmed to be made with chilli powder that does not contain Sudan I.
The products subject to recall present a health risk if consumed in sufficient quantity, and they do not comply with the food safety requirements specified in the Food Safety Act 1990 due to contamination with Sudan I.
The Food Standards Agency is continuing its investigations into the distribution of the affected chilli powder. Other companies and brands may have inadvertently received contaminated product, and further information and advice will be issued shortly.
